I've been thinking a lot about whether or not to join in with some fests this year. I signed up to quite a lot last year, and while every one was a lot of fun for different reasons, I'll admit to feeling a bit burnt out by the end of the year. So this year I kind of decided that I would only sign up to the ones I enjoy the most, both writing and reading, to cut back on some of the stess that I felt before. The only problem with this is that I kind of thrive on prompts. When I see one I like, the entire fic unfolds before me, and I get that itch to start writing. It's both a fantastic and frustrating feeling, because the stress comes from having to sign up and not knowing if I have the time to get it done.

What I'd really like, I think, is the option to jump in at the last minute, kind of thing? Like, if the prompt I liked hasn't already been claimed, and I find that I do have the time and end up writing it, I can just submit the finished fic to the fest? Does that make any sense? I've seen prompts at both [livejournal.com profile] dracotops_harry and [livejournal.com profile] harrydracompreg that I would love to write, I'm just... not sure I can fully commit, so I haven't signed up.

Idk, maybe my anxiety is just playing up at the moment, and I'm feeling the stress of signing up even before I actually do it, lol.

mpreg, at least, doesn't close claims. So you can start writing and claim at the end. <3

Does it not? I had no idea about that, that's awesome! I might do that, then (I've seen at least two prompts that I'd love to write, lol). Thanks! ♥

Yes definitely! I second this!

Actually that's pretty much my standing policy on any fests that I mod tbh. Always happy for late or last minute signups or submissions :)

I'm pretty sure DTH at least doesn't have a claiming close period. So you should be able to do something like that if you wanted. Of course, the problem is always that you end up writing the fic, and then find that in the meantime, somebody already claimed that prompt.

Generally, what I end up doing is finding a prompt I like, and then writing a bit of it to see if the writing flows/I can clearly see where it's going. If I know I have a vision for the prompt and I'm confident I can capture it, then I sign up, just so the prompt doesn't get snagged by somebody else. :)

I think that if you work well with prompts, and you're seeing ones that potentially grab your eye, you shouldn't necessarily limit yourself to never signing up. But, of course, moderation is always a good thing.

I had no idea some fests worked this way; I thought they all had a limited time during which you could claim - shows how much I know, lol!

Yeah, I might do something like what you suggested; see how easy the story comes, and if it seems like it's doable, sign up then. I think I'm just a little gun shy, after the stress of last year, which was totally my fault for jumping in with both feet without looking, haha!

Thanks for the advice sweetie!

Well apparently, that's actually the way most fests seem to work, I just didn't realise it, lmao! Thanks, darling! ♥

Here to say the same thing. Most fest don't close claiming, and others do just a week or so before posting (fan fair), and others close (smoochfest) But DTH and Mpreg don't! :D:D:D

Not to add stress to you, dear, at all, but I hope you can make it. I'm all for Lauren!FIC ALL THE TIME. <3

See, I totally didn't know this! I think I just used Smoochfest as a template and assumed all fests were run the same way (and gift exchange fests are, of course, closed by necessity). I am definitely leaning more toward participating now that I've learned this though, so thanks for the info! ♥

I loved everything you wrote last year! My favorites are A Malfoy in a Pear Tree and Make My Demons run. No pressure meant, but I'm excited for whatever you write this year.

Hearing what everyone has had to say has definitely made me more inclined to join in again this year, not gonna lie. Now that the stress has eased, I'll have to see which stories want to come out! Thanks, sweetie! ♥
