Fall TV shows begin!
I love TV. I watch a lot of it. A couple of years ago I even counted up the amount of fall shows I watch and it amounted to 21! There's less on my list these days, either because I've lost interest or because I just haven't found the time to catch up (I watch a lot of TV!), but there's still a few die hard shows that I can't give up on, a few newer ones I'm still giving the benefit of the doubt to, and I'm always looking for new shows to see if they tickle my fancy. Last night, Sleepy Hollow came back on, returning for its second season, and Gotham premiered its first episode, and I'm gonna talk about them real quick!
I loved the first season of Sleepy Hollow. It had all the makngs of the things that I love about TV: slightly creepy visuals; supernatural occurrences; a steaming hot ship (although unfortunately no slash or femslash as of yet, but I'm remaining hopeful!), and some amusing one liners. But without a doubt, the best thing about this show is that it's full to the brim with non-white people! Nicole Baharie is stunningly gorgeous as one of the two MCs, and Lyndie Greenwood, who plays her sister as a returning guest character, is just as beautiful. And let's not forget the amazing John Cho and Orlando Jones. I love it, it's just so refreshing to come across a TV show with all these amazing actors and actresses without it being a 'niche' genre.
So, I was excited to see this show come back, even though the last episode of season 1 felt a bit... rushed? I don't know, I think maybe they were worried that they might not get renewed? That would kind of explain the way everything was shoved at us with little explanation in the last episode. But anyway, the premiere episode for season 2 was good, I thought. A little disjointed and choppy, but I guess that's what happens when you end a season with all of your MCs separated. I'm still really enjoying the dynamic between Ichabod and Abbie, and although I ship them like Fedex, I think I would be okay with them just having the really close friendship that they have right now. The world needs more male/female friendships in narratives, tbh. Jenny is still awesome, and Katrina is still... a little bit creepy to me? I've kind of been a bit suspicious of her since the very beginning, and I'm still not sure that she's not playing both sides. I think that'd be fantastic to watch if she was though, but I guess we'll have to wait and see. The Headless Horseman is actually becoming less scary and more irritating to me though, but I kind of think that's the point? I mean, he starts off as a sign of the impending apocalypse, but it turns out he's just an idiot man who's sore that the woman he loved married someone else? Go cry somewhere else, dude, because I could not give less of a fuck about your misogynist manpain.
tl;dr: I liked the episode, it wasn't the best thing I've ever seen on TV, but it wasn't the worst either (the Vampire Diaries will forever hold that trophy, lol), and I think it set up a lot of the rest of the season fairly flawlessly. It would be nice if there wasn't a Chekov's gun in every single episode, but we can't have everything, I guess.
Okay so I love comic book characters. Spiderman was like my formative cartoon as a kid, and I spent a lot of time really wishing I was a mutant so I could go to Xavier's School for the Gifted. I legit cried when Michael Keaton stopped playing Batman and Val Kilmer took over because what was that? Terrible is what it was, never do that to me again ohmygod. So yeah, Gotham looked like it might be right up my street, so I gave its premiere episode last night a go.
It was... okay? I mean, there were a lot of really cheesy lines and scenarios, and unlike shows such as Teen Wolf, I don't think they were meant to be. Like, I think we were actually meant to be impressed when Jim Gordon stopped a guy from using a gun by throwing him a bottle of aspirin, whereas instead it just came across as dumb. But I did like it, especially all the little sneak peeks of the villains before they change. There was Penguin, whose actor really sold his creepiness, I was very impressed with him. I think we also met the Riddler? Possibly also Scarecrow. But the shining star of the group was one who didn't even have any lines: young Catwoman. She's amazing, and I can't wait to see more of her. Also Sean Pertwee as Alfred! I love that guy, so very fucking much. So yeah, I'm going to keep watching, at least for a while, to see where this new show goes. Hopefully it's somewhere good. Also, is it wrong that I'm kinda shipping Gordon/Alfred? Because I totally am. Oh! As a bonus, there's definitely some femslash thing going on between Gordon's fiancee and the woman from Major Crimes. Please for the love of all that is holy, give me some of that!
So, tonight is Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Anyone watching that? Or anything else they're looking forward to watching? Come tell me!
