There are times when the show is seriously flawed, but it's Stefan's character that truly disgusts me. He's not just manipulative, but emotionally abusive as well. He basically stalked Elena for months because she looked like his dead ex (can you say "unhealthy obsession?") then took advantage of her grief over her parents' deaths to manipulate her into a relationship for which she was totally unprepared.
Not only that, but he then proceeded to lie about every single aspect of his existence from that point on, no matter how many times he promised Elena that he'd be honest with her.
That's why I admire Damon so much. He can be a bastard sometimes, but he owns it, and he doesn't expect anyone to do anything for him. He's also a man of his word, unlike his brother, which is shown particularly in his agreement with Emily - the witch broke her promise to him before he ever made a move to hurt her family.
